Why You Can’t Call Home To Bangladesh …
Creative entrepreneurs have popped up everywhere setting up VOIP internet exchanges throughout Bangladesh that carry a huge volume of international phone calls into Bangladesh using the Internet. These exchanges usually consist of computer servers, gateways, and modems. These VOIP exchanges carried as much 80% of the total international telephone traffic but were highly illegal. The government wants to protect the state owned telephone company called the Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board. For a long time nothing was done about these VOIP exchanges that operated illegally and did not pay any tax on their revenues. Corruption is a big issue in Bangladesh and the illegal operations benefited many people. In January a state of emergency was declared in Bangladesh by a military backed government. They stoped the parliamentary elections that were due in January and have said they will hold the next elections in late 2008. They want to deal with and crack down on the widespread corruption that is affecting Bangladesh. At least 150 prominent politicians and government officials have been detained since the state of emergency was declared four months ago. The new military backed administration has been on a very big anti-corruption campaign against the graft and illegality of the past that Bangladeshi's have put up with for far too long. Hundreds of illegal businesses, shops and slums have been bulldozed and destroyed. The same has happened to the VOIP internet exchanges that have been making a great living from their illegal internet telephone services. They have been selling international telephone call capacity to foreign phone card companies who have also benefited greatly by their very low rates and margins. Closing down these internet exchanges has sent the telephone network and capacity in to complete turmoil in Bangladesh. You now have millions of callers trying to make the same volume of calls on 20% of the capacity that existed previously – there is less and less capacity available all the time. The capacity shortage and scarcity is starting to drive prices higher. The interim administration is trying desperately to double the number of regular telephone circuits to 30,000! This is unlikely to fix the problem quickly. When calling from Australia there are a number of phone cards that can be used. At the moment the call rates are changing very frequently. The best phone cards for Bangladesh are Hot, Cobra, Captain and Smiley. The cheapest call rate to Bangladesh is Hot phone cards rate of 3.9c/min with no connection fee and calls to Dhaka are 2c/min. The line quality on all phone cards has dropped dramatically with the loss of the VOIP internet exchanges and this is likely to continue for the rest of the year.
