Why Are Verisign Ssl Certs More Expensive Then Other Certificates?

To understand the vast differences in price for different SSL certs, you need to understand the differences in the companies. Higher quality certs such as Verisign SSL are more expensive because they require much more information to obtain, supply higher security, and are recognized by all browsers as safe. Paying more may be worth it to make your visitors feel secure.

Many of the cheaper SSL certs don't require more than a phone number to verify the person or company purchasing them. This means that pretty much anyone, even a fly by night type of business can get them and claim they're verified. This causes concern from the aspect of a visitor and potential customers. Visitors who are well informed will avoid sites that are verified with lesser name certs. Even those who aren't may be advised not to visit sites that are not verified with reputable certs.

SSL certs that have more rigorous standards for qualification are typically more safe for everyone involved. They put the visitors at ease knowing they are dealing with a legitimate business or individual, and they put those they verify at ease by displaying this level of security. You wouldn't do business offline with a company that was not properly licensed in your state, so why would you expect less from the internet?

Another bonus of VeriSign SSL is that it is recognised by almost all browsers. When a browser comes across a certificate which it does not recognize, it typically displays a message to warn the visitor of this. Many visitors will choose not to visit that site simply based on these warnings, mainly because many of them do not know the ins and outs of certs. This will lower your visitor count and revenue, and cheat visitors out of a chance to view your services.

In the long run, using certs which require a bit more information to verify you, and may cost a bit more can ultimately save you a lot of money. They allow visitors to feel safe at your site, and allow you to feel safe doing business with them. The certs market is really no different than most other markets in the fact that you get what you pay for. Most terms are for a year or more, so be sure to research several options in depth before making the decision that's best for your site and/or company.
