Some may think that all cigarettes are the same, but the different lengths of cigarettes have an effect on your smoking experience. Whether it is a 72, an 80, a 100, or a 120, cigarettes are made differently to give smokers a different smoking experience. In the days of black and white movies, cigarettes were a fashion statement. They were a prop in the play of life. There would be attractive man or woman dressed in fine clothing, holding a cigarette with the utmost style and charisma. Sometimes you would see a cigarette attached to a long cigarette holder. This was the early years of a tobacco industry that would grow exponentially to enormous proportions.

Tobacco companies were wise then, but the trillions of dollars brought in have made them geniuses in the field of marketing. It is common knowledge today that the tobacco industry brings in more money than a lot of countries do. Their manufacturing and selling techniques are no small scale venture. As it is said, ‘there is a method behind the madness’. Most of what you see regarding the different lengths of cigarettes is based around marketing strategies.

The ideal scenario for any company is to create a dedicated customer. To achieve that purpose, companies participate in an art form called “Branding”. The main premise is to make you become dedicated to a brand name. You may have heard the question asked,”What type of cigarettes do you smoke”. Have you ever heard the reply, “I smoke any kind”. No you have not. That is because tobacco companies are marketing geniuses with the money to back their marketing research. Their research has led them into making different type of cigarettes. You may smoke a different length of cigarette, but it is still a cigarette. You get the same product in different form.

Most smokers prefer a specific style of cigarette, or should I say that they have been “branded” to. It may be a 100. The 100 refers to its length in millimeters. You may also hear a 100 called ‘kings’. They are a little longer in length compared to their counterparts. Tobacco companies also make 72s, 80s, 100s, and 120s; all of which refer to their size in millimeters.

You may have heard of ‘lights’. Light are said to be made with more holes in the filter. This allows the smoker to inhale more air, creating a light smoking experience or a lighter taste. Lights are also said to have less tar in them, compared to other types of cigarettes. You may know people that smoke menthols. Menthols have a minty taste. Tobacco executives are concerned with creating smoking an experience and menthol cigarettes help to provides that.

It is clear and without a doubt that tobacco companies have done their homework. They have created the same product in numerous ways so to create smoking an experience, and to connect smokers with a brand. The different length of cigarettes of cigarettes are all about marketing and “branding”.
