Why Is The Market For Refurbished Ds Lites Growing So Much?

Since the Nintendo DS Lite was first launched in March 2006, around eighty five million units have been sold, which is a staggering amount, even for a world firmly committed to gaming in all of its various formats. This figure does not even include the rising sales of refurbished DS Lites. The popularity of the handheld gaming device is not limited to the traditionally strong gaming countries such as the USA, Europe and the far East, but its success has also spread to the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand and parts of South America. What has made it so popular? I see it as a highly advanced version of the Gameboy, which introduced the world to the pleasure of hand held gaming. Portability What the DS Lite has done it take it a step further and introduced a huge amount of high quality games to play.

Such a high amount of products sold has led to an interesting secondary market is refurbised DS Lites. As different versions of the DS Lite have been released, such as limited edition models relating to certain games such as the Pirates of the Caribbean edition and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass edition, and different colours have made their way onto the market (pink has unsurprisingly proved extremely popular with the female gamers) - so people have upgraded to these new versions. With the current trend for recycling, where previously the old models would be thrown away, they are now more often returned to the manufacturer or bought up by organisations who can resell them.

This has led to websites in particular offering refurbished DS Lites for purchase all over the world. There is a very specific process that these companies go through in order to ensure that the refurbished models are of the same quality as the originals. After all, no business would be successful if their refurbished models felt second hand or were not up to standard. What generally happens is that a model is acquired by a factory, who then take it apart bit by bit. Each part is examined to ensure that it is in full working order, and any parts that do not meet this criteria are replaced. The DS Lite is then reassembled and boxed up with the same instruction manuals and charging equipment that were sold with it originally. A 12 month warranty will often be added to increase consumer confidence in the product.

Why would someone want a refurbished DS Lite rather than an absolutely brand new one? Well the most obvious benefit is price. The products are often sold well under the original selling price, which opens up the market to a wider demographic. By making them affordable to more people, more games are consequently sold, so there are benefits to all involved. Because the quality standards are strictly adhered to, there is little risk of receiving a below par product. Most of the time, the same wide range of colours are also available. It also makes it more sensible and affordable to upgrade or change colour in the future.

This type of business model is increasing, as more products - from IGO Sat Navs to portable media players - are being recycled and refurbished in this way. Whilst the motivation for this may not necessarily be environmentally friendly, this is certainly an additional benefit. To find out more information on this and more, click on the links below.
