Even though boat radars are pretty helpful in boat operations, the perils of sea navigation and the desire for safety and convenience during travel require a more state-of-the-art equipment; one that does more than just determine speed, location, heading, and which direction to steer towards. This is why mariners and boat owners or operators now use the marine GPS. Like the boat radar, the marine GPS comes with a radar and a weather option to help determine weather conditions and detect other land targets that may affect vessel navigation.
However, the marine GPS shows much difference even on the display options alone. It's basically like the radar screen still, but it's colored, with touch screen, and it can be zoomed up close for more details. Four primary data will appear on your chart display: GPS heading, speed, depth, and the position. Save for primary data, you can also view the display page up close and determine water depths withing or away from the vicinity. Deeper water is shown in white, while shallow waters come in blue. Mariners and boaters find this very helpful as it helps them avoid waters that are too shallow for their boats to go through.
Marine charts also determine visibility in the areas you select. Mariners cannot just determine visibility by knowing the weather conditions in certain areas as they are not directly proportional. Drizzles and showers may cause zero visibility just as heavy rains could lessen visibility to a certain extent only. Mariners may also tell of the tides in all areas covered by the chartplotters as these are programmed into the equipment already. A very helpful feature in the GPS is it's ability to tell of the presence and facts about marinas and ports. By clicking or touching a marina on the screen, the monitor shows the marine travel essentials that may interest mariners: fuel availability, marine services offered, basic provisions, acceptable modes of payment, and miscellaneous services including restrooms. This is especially convenient for seamen, and those who are leisurely roaming parts around the world.
