Wilderness Survival Basics

Wilderness survival is an important skill to have. You never know when something could happen – maybe your car will break down miles from civilization. If anything like that should happen, and you find yourself stuck in the wilderness, then you should at least know the important skills of survival. It’s impossible to tell you everything you need to know. The best think you can do is to start camping out and exploring in order to put your skills to the test and learn more firsthand. But here is some good information to start with.

Your first priority will be to find a place to camp out overnight. It should be near a water source so that you can stay hydrated, but out of the way of obvious paths that animals take. You don’t want a bear to stumble upon you on his way to get a drink. After you’ve found the spot that you will stay at, you should build a fire. If you’ve got matches, then good for you. The process will be easy. Gather dry firewood, and underneath it put kindling. Kindling can include twigs, dry grass, leaves, or any other easily flammable things. Keep plenty nearby in case your firewood is reluctant to catch and you need to keep the temperature high. After you’ve got a good fire going, you should be safe from wildlife.

Next, since you have a good place to sleep, you are ready to search for food. Berries and other plants are the best and most easy source. As long as you know what’s edible and what isn’t, you should be able to find food right away. If possible, you can also catch a fish. You can use rocks to make a fish trap, and have a few within hours. When you’re in the wilderness without any cooking supplies, it is best to eat the fish raw. The thought may seem gross, but you are unlikely to get any diseases, and you will get more energy from the raw fish. If this is unacceptable, you can try cooking it on a stick.

People have survived in the wilderness for months, and it is not an incredibly difficult thing to do. Just keep your wits about you, and take on a methodical method in getting the things that you need to survive. Focus first on your own body’s needs such as water and shelter, and then focus secondarily on making efforts to get rescued.
