Will Compact Cars Outsell Mid-sized In 2012?

Soaring gas prices, heavier traffic, and smaller families all could be affecting American car sales. Not in numbers, but in the type of cars sold. According to J.D. Power and Associates, compact cars may outsell mid-size vehicles as early as the first quarter of 2012.

Midsize cars have been the favorite vehicle sold in the American market for decades, outselling compacts by 250,000 vehicles as recently as five years ago. J.D. Power predicts that midsize vehicles will fall to just 14 percent of the U.S. market by 2015, but compacts will account for 20 percent at that time.

Why? Well, many compact cars now offer 40 mpg. Another reason is the cars that are now considered to be compacts are barely smaller than a traditional mid-size. Compact cars are more tech savvy and less stripped down rolling pieces of ugly metal, as well.

The trend towards compacts could change at any moment. Factors like a growing economy, steady fuel prices, or a surge in the birth rate could make mid-size vehicles more attractive again.
