Will Lutein Improve Vision?
Over the years people have discovered this substance that occurs naturally in green leafy vegetables called lutein. This natural chemical has a few different uses normally as a natural color die; it is used in chicken feed causing the chicken to have a yellow tint. There was a point that it was discovered that there was a small amount of lutein inside of the eye. Located in the retina lutein does a number of things that helps to keep the eye safe. It was noticed that as a person gets older the amount of lutein decreases, so the question was raised, will lutein improve vision? Although lutein has not been studied to the point of completely answering this question, initial studies are showing some promise. The research conducted so far, show that ingesting lutein your whole life allows the lutein in your eyes to stay at the same level for most of your life. This is really encouraging in the battle with macular degeneration and cataracts. The studies on macular degeneration show that making sure the eye maintains a high level of lutein should slow down or prevent altogether this conditions that affects thousands of people every day. This is really exciting news for those predisposed to this condition. The only negative to this study is that it showed that once the damage had occurred, it could not be reversed; therefore lutein is not the answer once macular degeneration has already begun. Studies have also been done on the subject of if lutein levels have any effect on cataracts. Once again the amount of lutein found in the eye seems to have a connection to the formation a cataracts. The results of this research showed that in individuals the maintained their lutein levels, there was a lower occurrence of cataracts. This study also showed that lutein could not be used to correct the damage from this condition after the fact. While this may not be the complete answer to everything as it pertains to lutein, there is hope that continued research will give people a better understanding of the benefits of lutein. A person’s eyes cannot be replaced, and if your vision is damaged there is not much hope that your vision can be restored, however doctors and scientists are working every day to learn everything they can to try and restore lost vision. The simple discovery of lutein in the retina of the eye will go a long way to see how lutein may be able to help not only prevent vision lose, but if it can become part of the cure.
