Will The New Eu Cookie Laws Be A Pain For Users

The European Union has a new law that will take effect in 2011. It will make it so that the end user, that is you, will have to consent every time a cookie is placed on your machine. A cookie is a small text document that will inform the website about your last visit, what you did there, and sometimes other information like what page that you came from previously. Sometimes they are used for money making purposes but many times it is more of a tracking issue allowing a website to show different material to you as a first time user versus a user who has been there day after day. Most websites today use some forms of cookies. Will this new law be a pain to computer users?

Imagine that you sit down and do a search. Any listing you click on will immediately have a big pop up disclaimer saying that you can't see the site unless you agree to the cookie. You hit back not sure what this means. Then the next site does the same and the next. Eventually this will remind people of Windows Vista where every time you wanted to install something the administrative pop up would show up. Most people who are not aware of cookies or the laws will probably be a bit afraid to accept cookies because they are not sure if they are malicious like a virus or spyware.

What would be a better way of doing this?

A better way would be to inform internet users what cookies are and how you can turn them off or block them entirely in your browser. Many browsers now have a privacy mode where no cookies are added to the machine and the history of the browser is not saved. This gives the user the choice to either be accepting cookies or not without having to have these annoying full page disclaimers where the end user must either accept it or not be able to access the site.
