William Hurt’s Best Films On Satellite Tv In California And Wyoming

William Hurt is an actor who has the everyman features and quiet presence which can lead filmgoers to forget what a great actor he is. Certainly not a flashy thespian, Hurt’s most high-profile role might have been his Oscar-nominated turn in A History of Violence. With a bizarre facial hair look, Hurt was almost unrecognizable. Nevertheless, his appearances come in some of cinema’s best films. Here are five of his best films for satellite TV viewers in California and Wyoming.

5. Broadcast News. In what can be seen as Hurt’s first Golden Period, he played the role of sportscaster looking to move up in this 1987 James L. Brooks film. Alongside Holly Hunter and Albert Brooks, Hurt had the challenge of playing dumb, a tough one for such an obviously intelligent actor. One of the Hollywood successes of the 1980s, you can see this film on satellite TV networks.

4. The Kiss of the Spider Woman. Adapted for the screen from a Manuel Puig novel, this 1985 film features Hurt in an extremely challenging role. While he and Raul Julia rot away in a Brazilian prison, the two form an unlikely bond. Interpreting one of the most unsavory characters available to an actor, Hurt proved his versatility and took home an Academy Award for Best Actor in the process.

3. A History of Violence. As Viggo Mortensen tries to go about his business in a small Midwestern town, some thugs try to rob his diner. Featuring a grittiness not usually found behind the counter, Mortensen leaves the two of them dead and the story attracts media attention from all over. He soon gets a visit from some thugs claiming he’s someone else, someone wanted by a crime ring in Philadelphia. Hurt plays the crime leader in Philly who wants to have few words with his long lost brother. A thrilling David Cronenberg film, this picture should be seen uncut on satellite TV premium networks.

2. Body Heat. In this neo-noir film that was a sensation in the 1980s, Hurt plays an unethical lawyer who falls for the wrong woman and gets sucked into the wrong plot. In the tense atmosphere, Kathleen Turner shines as a femme fatale and Ted Danson gets a brilliant part as a flamboyant District Attorney. Hurt drives the action in what became his real breakout role. Check it out on satellite TV’s best movie networks in Wyoming and California.

1. Smoke. If there was ever a literary film, this one is it. Playing a Brooklyn writer hired by the New York Times to write a Christmas Story, Hurt gets a little too wrapped up with a troubled neighborhood youth. With dynamic supporting roles by Forest Whitaker and Harvey Keitel, Smoke is a quiet, thoughtful film written by Paul Auster and directed by Wayne Wang. See it on the Independent Film Channel in HD.
