Window Shades Are Great At Home, Office
For those members of the workforce whose professions demand evening work or those who are highly sensitive to light while in repose, a way to control light is of utmost importance. Bright lights can keep one awake and thus affect how one would feel during the complete day, let alone the cumulative effect of not getting enough rest through sleep. Modern window shades are able to control light at any desired level, be that complete blackout or a specific translucency factor. Window shades fabricated of blackout roller shades fabrics will not allow light through the fabric itself, only diffused light around the edges between the fabric and the window casement. The amount of diffused light is dependant of how the roller shade is installed. In a recessed installation where the roller shade is installed within the frame of the window, the closer the roller shade is installed to the glass the lesser the amount of light that will be allowed into the room. Also, the closer the roller shade is installed to the sides of the windows, the lesser the amount of light entering the room. Custom made, quality roller shades, whenever properly measured and installed, are always better light controllers that lower priced, ready made window shades found in department or big box stores. Another point of entry of light into a room is the upper space between the roller shade and the inside casement of the window. This light gap is mostly corrected by the addition of a valance or fascia and only a very small amount of diffused light will enter the room. The only space left where light can come in is through the space between the bottom rail and the windowsill and this can be minimized by allowing the bottom rail to rest softly on the windowsill, one of the reasons why correct measurement is very important. In addition to a recess installation or inside mount as known in the industry, roller shades can be installed outside of the window opening (outside mount). It is recommended that window shades which are to be outside mounted be considerably wider and longer that the actual opening and if the window is framed, serious thought should be given to considering the frame as if it were part of the window opening. The wider and longer the shade the less amount of light that will enter the room. Many customers consider a combination of two forms of window treatment per window, i.e. a roller shade and a plantation shutter. The particular needs of the room and its application should be of primary importance whenever making the decision. As my business day comes to an end and I look forward to a relaxing evening at home, regardless of the season, I can control the light and ambiance of my living space to reflect a certain mood or prepare for entertaining family or friends. As I mentioned earlier, there are some windows that I chose to use two separate and distinctive types of window treatments to insure my privacy in addition to light control. As an example, my family room faces west and the addition of the second set of blackout roller shades, I am in full control not only of the light entering the room but also of the sun’s radiant heat and glare thus saving on energy costs and also protecting my furnishings of the harmful fading effects of sunlight. In summary, window shades, alone or as a part of any other form of window treatment, are a highly useful product which can, in addition to define a certain decor, allow you to live your lifestyle regardless of the influence of the clock.
