Wingate University 2011 Football

Wingate University is a private coeducational institution located 30 miles southwest of Charlotte, in the town of Wingate, North Carolina. The 400 acre campus is home to the Wingate Bulldogs, who play NCAA Division II football in the South Atlantic Conference. Last year Wingate had its most successful football season, winning the conference championship for the first time in the school’s history and qualifying for the NCAA Division II play-offs. The team is highly ranked in 2011 and hopes to repeat the successes of last season.

Thus far the team has a 2-2 record for the 2011 season. The Bulldogs lost their season opener to Valdosta State in a hard fought battle. Valdosta State came out on top 34-28 in double overtime. The Bulldogs were outplayed in their second game, which they lost to Albany State by a disappointing score of 49-28. Wingate was back on track for game three against UNC Pembroke winning 29-26 in overtime. Sixteen unanswered points in the final quarter forced the overtime. In game four Wingate beat Brevard College 35-31 in an exciting come from behind victory. Of these four teams, the only conference opponent was Brevard.

Four home games remain to be played this season. The Bulldogs play Carson Newman on October 1 and Newberry College on October 15. Homecoming is scheduled for November 5 against non-conference opponent North Greenville University. The final home game of the season will be against Tusculum on November 12. Away games left on the schedule are Mars Hill on October 8, Catawba on October 22, and Lenoir-Rhyne on October 29.

Joe Reich is in his 11th year as head coach of the Bulldogs. Prior to coming to Wingate, Reich spent eight years as an assistant football coach at the University of Buffalo. In 2010 Reich coached the team to a 9-3 season record. Wingate won the South Atlantic Conference title and went on to play in the NCAA Division II tournament. The Bulldogs play their home games in Irwin Belk Stadium on the Wingate campus. Completed in 1998, the stadium seats 3,000 fans. Single game tickets are reasonably priced. General admission seating is $12 and reserved seating is $16. Parking is available on campus.
