There are thousands of wood boat plans available over the internet. Tons of confusions start coming to our mind when we need to choose a few among them. I have been in this situation several times before. Listed below are some of my thumb rules which I use to sort out good wood boat plans

1. A good plan should be such that even an amateur boat builder can understand it without much effort. You may be a seasoned boat builder and looking to make a luxury boat. But, a good plan should be able to explain all the features clearly.

2. The next thing I check is whether the plan gives sufficient details of all the parts. Many a times due to absence of sufficient details an amateurs boat builder makes mistakes in shaping and positioning some of the parts, especially few parts like paddle, hull. So, look at the plan thoroughly and visualize the boat and it’s all the components and make sure that it leaves no doubt.

3. A lot of confusions arise during boat construction. Good wood boat planscome with the description of the construction techniques. See, if your plan has a step by step construction guideline. The first plan I used came with a construction guideline. It was mentioned that using the guideline, the boat could be built in 3 days. I followed the guideline exactly and built the boat in exactly 3 days.
