Working With People Outside Your Business
One way to leverage someone else’s experience is to get a mentor, a person you can lean on for help. There will almost always be someone out there willing to take you under their wing, sharing knowledge and experience you can’t easily get elsewhere. If you’re lucky, you may be able to find a mentor through an internship or apprenticeship deal, where it doesn’t cost you anything more than your time; more likely, however, you’ll have to pay someone substantial sums to let you look over their shoulder while you learn a particular skill that they’ve mastered. If that’s the case, don’t be dismayed by the fact that the mentor-student relationship is a business transaction; there should be value on both sides of the equation, as in every business relationship. So if you can’t write copy well, pay a freelance copywriter to come to your office and teach you. Watch and assist them while they work on your sales letters and ads, so you can learn their tips and tricks. If Internet marketing is a mystery, hire a consultant who does it on a daily basis and have them show you the ropes. If you need encouragement and general business tips, hire a motivational coach to guide you through your issues. It’s worth every dime, because it can be vastly profitable in the end, assuming you vigorously apply what you’ve learned to your business.
