Working Your Way Up Through A Corporation

Climbing the corporate ladder is something that any ambitious employee wants to achieve. Yet, for some it isn’t as easy as you’d think. There’s a reason why those who do ascend to the top are rewarded with a better job and an increased salary – because it takes hard work and determination to get to the top.

That’s the biggest myth that can be shattered. There are no short cuts or quick tips to working your way up to the top, and it takes more than just hard work. You need to possess the right attributes, and talk to the people in the know. If you’re willing to put in the effort and have done so honestly without harming or affecting other colleagues, then in time you’ll steadily climb that all important ladder.

Work Hard

Are you happy in your job and do you enjoy the industry? If so, you need to ask yourself whether or not you want to work hard to make a success of it. If you enjoy what you do, and you know it’s the right career opportunity, then why stagnate in your current position? Work hard and secure that much needed promotion.

This is the starting point for anyone climbing the ladder, having that drive and determination sorts the ones who want it from those who don’t. This is fundamentally what you need to do to get noticed, and is a great starting point for anyone looking to get promoted within. Show you are willing to make sacrifices and take on more responsibility, in time your efforts will be rewarded.

Don’t scheme

Those who get to the top by scheming or showing no regard to their colleagues and peers on their way up to the top will eventually fall and come crashing back down. It takes more than hard work to get noticed, but when you start playing games with other colleagues you’ll be treading on very dangerous ground in the long run.

Trying to outsmart, impress, or show distain or contempt towards colleagues, just to make yourself stand out will come back to haunt you. You may get somewhere in the long run, but the truth is, those at the top making the decisions will mark your card and have you down as a trouble maker. Not scheming doesn’t mean not having a career plan, on the contrary, it’s vital to have a plan and stick to it, but make sure you still have the respect of your colleagues on the way up.

Show Leadership

This is a tough one, especially of you are new to the company and starting from the bottom. You don’t want to tread on anyone’s toes and take their responsibility and dishing out orders, but you can show signs of leadership by raising morale and encouraging positivity within the office. Maybe even come up with new ideas to hit targets or improve performance, this will show you can inspire and motivate your colleagues.

Another way of showing leadership skills is to take charge of your role and responsibilities. Don’t sit around being told what to do, be proactive about your role and always stay one or two steps ahead of your boss and peers.

Add Value to the Company

Simply working honestly and hard, whilst taking control of your own role is not enough, you need to also come up with ideas and help progress the business. This is known as adding value to the company. Picture it this way, if the company were to dispense of your services, will they be able to cope without you and more to the point, will they be the same company without you and the skills you bring? If so, be sure to knuckle down and start bringing additional skills to the company.

The way you can bring something extra to the business is to come up with innovative ideas to make yours and your colleagues’ working day more efficient, as well as unique ways to generate extra income, for example establishing new services or links with new clients or industry insiders.
