Office for National Statistics figures suggest that a fairly large number of part-time jobs exist in Bristol. However some of the jobs advertised are for vacancies existing at the beginning of September at least and will therefore no longer exist. Nevertheless new vacancies are constantly being created.
In 2008, the population of Bristol was just under 425,000, of which the male and female population was roughly equal. The population of working age (defined as females between 16 and 59, and males between 16 and 64) was 287,000 in roughly equal numbers. Males did, however, exceed females numerically.
Between April 2008 and March 2009 the ‘economically active’ (ie those aged 16 or over whether employed or unemployed) population was over 225,000. 216,000 of these were in employment, over 188,000 being employees. The number of people employed decreases from Groups 1-3 (managers/professional staff) to Groups 6-7 (personal service and sales and customer services). It then rises slightly for groups 8 and 9 (process plant and elementary occupations).
Labour demand (jobs and vacancies within Bristol) figures are for 2007 and therefore should be treated cautiously. ‘Job density ‘ (defined as the number of jobs per resident of working age) for 2007 was 261,000, of which the total number of employee jobs was over 225,000. Of these about 70,000 were part-time jobs, slightly over 54,250 part-time workers being female, a female to male ratio of about 3:1. Figures for full-time work reveal a ratio of male to female employment of approximately 3:2.
Some part-time work can be found via the internet. Not all searches under ‘part-time work’ guarantee that the jobs listed are in fact ‘part-time’ or even that the vacancies exist. At least one vacancy was accompanied by adverts encouraging people to adopt pandas, which may well involve full-time work!
For those seeking part-time work the picture appears fairly optimistic, depending on qualifications. Part-time work does offer a chance to be on the ‘work-ladder’ with a view to obtaining full-time work for those seeking such opportunities. Happy hunting!
