In these modern times, we want things faster, easier, better. We live in an age of quick dinners, and fast cars. Our homes are full of time saving gadgets. We do not want to labor over tasks and chores; we want to get it done as quick and as painless as possible.

We already can activate our house’s alarm system with a remote control. We can change our entertainment center, the radio and the television’s stations, functions and volume with a remote control. The electric gate is activated by a remote control, and the garage door.

There are different types of garage door controls, some that use a remote control and others that not only have remote controls, but also a keypad, where you can key in a code to open and close the door. Very clever indeed. So now you don’t have to go into the house, hunting for the car keys with the garage door controls on the key ring, now you can open the garage door by punching in a preselected code.

The kitchen is a miracle of technology. You froth the milk, chocolate and coffee in seconds with a hand held device. The same sort of device can puree fruit or vegetables in less than a minute, suitable for special dishes and baby food. What about all the instant meals we can produce? Gone are the days of laboring over a hot stove. Now you can get most things out of a packet, just add water, heat and serve.

We don’t have to be house bound in order to have telephone contact with our colleagues, friends and loved ones. The cellular phone has made sure that you are within reach 24 hours at a time. Unless you let the battery run down, and not recharge.

We don’t carry cash with us anymore, we use credit cards to pay for purchases. There is online shopping for just about anything on earth these days, and you need not go out of the house for them, they can be delivered right to your doorstep. I can get a street map and a picture of an address I have never been to before, just by using the internet.

Land speed world records are being set up with super fast cars that look like mini space stations and are looking equally difficult to handle. We get sun driven bikes and cars. The new energy saver is to install solar power. Technology can also produce energy from waste. We paint our house with quick dry paints that are low on fumes.

The only thing we haven’t mastered yet, is to get into a travel cubicle, press a few buttons, the door will close, we will have to wait only a few seconds, the door will open, and we will be at our end destination, like China, or Japan, or France, or Grandma’s place. Unfortunately, we still have to sit hours travelling to these destinations. Although I do believe that some sharp brained scientist must have thought about this problem?
