World’s Top Ten Weirdest Sports
#10 Biggest Beard Competition The tenth position slot is given to a competition rather than a sport, and is probably the only member of the top 10 to get away with a standard cheap travel insurance policy. The one and only World Beard and Moustache Championships require nothing more from participants than sprouting a large quantity of facial hair. Last held in Alaska in 2007, bearded men from around the world congregated to determine the hairiest of them all, with the triumphant winner coming from the USA. #9 Kickball for Grown-Ups Kickball, traditionally a children’s schoolyard game, has made a comeback in the USA, among adults this time. Tournaments are being held across the country, and players take this game just as seriously as any other, travelling far and wide to compete. #8 Toe Wrestling Believe it or not, toe wrestling has now become a recognised sport. The first World Toe Wrestling Competition was held in a pub in Derbyshire in 1976, and an application has since been made to make it an Olympic sport. Sadly, the application was rejected, and toe wrestlers cannot become Olympic champions. Toe wrestlers should be aware that standard cheap travel insurance policies may well not cover any foot injuries they might incur, and additional coverage might be needed. #7 Wife Carrying This bizarre and borderline politically incorrect sport was first started in Finland. The aim of the game is for male competitors to carry a female across an obstacle course as speedily as possible. A good cheap travel insurance policy is definitely necessary for the poor female who is used as a prop in this peculiar sport! #6 Fist Ball Many people are unaware that this is an actual sport. Players hit or punch the ball to the side of the court where their opponents cannot touch it, a game which is now featured in The World Games. #5 Underwater Hockey This is definitely the sort of sport which may cause spectators some alarm. The game involves hitting a putt into goals at the bottom of a swimming pool. Although water will slow down the game’s speed, it is unlikely that it would be considered a reasonably safe activity when it comes to things like cheap travel insurance. #4 Boxing with Brains While on a normal chess championship tour you would be at little risk of bodily injury, the World Chess Boxing Organisation hosts different tournaments entirely. The game involves a combination of chess playing and boxing, and these are probably the only chess players in the world who are at risk of incurring head injuries during a chess match. #3 Bog Snorkelling In a dense peat bog just outside Llanwrtyd in Wales, a very odd competition takes place every August Bank Holiday. Competitors are clad in flippers and a snorkel, and have to complete the race through the bog using only their flippers, and no other form of swimming. #2 Humans vs Horses Again in Llanwrtyd in Wales, a peculiar annual event is held, this time involving horses instead of snorkels. Humans compete against horses in a tournament testing strength and agility. It is fairly unlikely that if you travel to this event, and wish to partake, that any cheap travel insurance policy would cover the injuries that you are quite likely to incur unless you possess the strength of a horse. #1 Chasing Cheese The absolute silliest and most ludicrous sport to be invented is a race against a ball of cheese. A huge ball of Gloucester cheese is rolled down a hill, and participants need to beat it to the bottom. Needless to say, if you tumble and break your leg while chasing the runaway food item, don’t even bother phoning the emergency number on your travel insurance policy as you will never convince anyone you were taking reasonable precautions.
