Write What You Love

“Writing isn’t generally a lucrative source of income; only a few exceptional writers reach the income levels associated with the best-sellers. Rather, most of us write because we can make a modest living or even supplement our day jobs doing something about which we feel passionately. Even at the worst of times, when nothing goes right, when the prose is clumsy and the ideas feel stale, at least we’re doing something that we genuinely love. There’s no other reason to work this hard except that love”
~Melissa Scott (science fiction and fantasy author)

As Melissa Scott once said, most writers choose to write because they love to do so; despite the fact that writing is not a “lucrative source of income.” Writers are indeed artists who take great interest in their craft. Many argue that writing is at its best when it comes from the heart, that a writer performs best when he writes what he loves. Others argue that this won’t help a writer to make money. That one should write instead, on subjects that will get people’s attention.

The wonderful thing about writing is that there is no one way to do it. There is no one subject that you need to focus on, no one style. But for someone to read what you’ve written, it has to be good. As famous author of science fiction Ray Bradbury once said, a writer really does write best when he does what he does with enthusiasm. This is the case with any profession. We tend to perform best in areas that interest us.

“Zest. Gusto. How rarely one hears these words used. How rarely do we see people living, or for that matter creating by them. Yet if I were asked to name the most important items in a writer’s make-up, the things that shape him and rush him along the road to where he wants to go; I could only warn him to look to his zest, see to his gusto.”
~Ray Bradbury (writer of science fiction)

For some people the greatest motivation is money, as in the case of those who write blog posts. Bloggers, who hope to earn “by the click” would of course focus on topics of general interest.

Still it can’t be denied that you can’t please everyone, because in doing so you only end up losing yourself.

“I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failing is trying to please everybody”
~Bill Cosby

If someone loves writing enough to choose it as a profession, he would obviously be inclined to write what he loves writing about. Writing is about expressing yourself. It’s up to the writer to make what he loves writing about, sound interesting to others as well.

“Write your story as it needs to be written. Write it honestly; tell it as best as you can. I’m not sure that there are any other rules. Not ones that matter.”
~Neil Gaiman (English author)
