Writing Ads To Sell Your Product Or Service
Highlight a principle selling position. Decide what makes your product or service different or better than others available in the market. It could be the quality, price, safety, convenience etc…. Choose your selling position and highlight it in your ad. Reach your target demographic. Think about who you want to target with your ad. This will be important in helping you decide when and where to place your advertisement. The Headline is the most important part of your ad. Information clutter has forced people to skim read, therefore writing an attention grabbing headline is crucial. The headline should be based on your principle selling position and should ideally contain no more that 7 words. Compose the sentence with some action words to make it more effective. Headlines should be typed in all caps or cap the first letter of every word for maximum effect. Study advertisements from similar industries to get an idea, and then write down several headlines before choosing the one you decide to go with. Keep it short. People pick up a magazine to read articles not advertisements; they switch on the TV to watch their favorite show not listen to advertisements; so keep the ads short and sweet but also informative and effective. Create an emotional connection. Develop a list of features for your product and translate them into corresponding benefits for the consumer. This benefit should be emphasized to create an emotional connection to the product. For example, you’re selling a car and its feature is that it’s safe and reliable. The benefit of this feature is that incase you meet with an accident the chances of walking away is 30% more than in other cars. So now you have to pitch this benefit to the customer with an emotional connection, so paint a picture of a couple driving their car transporting their new born baby home for the first time, and a drunk driver runs the red light and crashes into their car, but thanks to the safety feature of your product no one gets hurt. Tell your readers what to do. Add phrases like “call now” or “order now”. Ordering details must be clearly stated and easy to understand. It is also a good strategy to include a sales pitch for example offer a 30% discount for orders received within the next 24 hours. Provide contact details. Don’t forget to include all contact information- Company name, telephone numbers, fax, email, websites and any other contact information you can think of. The easier it is for the customer to contact you the better your chances are of making a sale.
