You are here because you want to know how to write a good online article. Unfortunately, I can't teach you how to write well, not in one article. And anyway, I'm not a good enough writer to be qualified to teach. But I do know a thing or two about writing for the online audience, and this article is about how to gear your writing for the online world.
Know Your Subject
If you don't know anything about a subject, how can you write knowledgeably, passionately and persuasively about it, right? So make sure you have some familiarity with a topic before starting to write about it.
Use Subheadings And Write In Point Form
Most of your readers are in an awful hurry. So do them a favor and separate your article into different sections using subheadings. And if you are presenting a list, use bullet points. Remember to do it in such a way that your readers can get the gist of your article just by reading the subheadings and the bullet points.
Use The First Person
I have always been a fan of writing in the first person. I think it gets your message across and makes your readers sit up and take notice. It really feels like you are there in person with them. In case you are still wondering, consider the following sentence: "Before the next step is undertaken, it is recommended that goggles be worn." Compare that to the first person: "I would recommend that you wear goggles before undertaking the next step."
Be Short And To The Point
Your online audience is more interested in the knowledge and experience that you have, and less in your writing skills. So write in short sentences, be clear and to the point, and don't worry too much about not being a Hemingway or Shakespeare. And don't forget to write short paragraphs as well.
Check For Errors In Grammar And Spelling
Make sure you run your article through a spell checker. And before submitting your article, spend a few minutes and give it a onceover to eliminate any grammatical errors. Remember that it doesn't have to be perfect, but you also do not want any obvious errors in your article.
Conclusion
On the Internet, there are articles written purely for SEO ranking, their only purpose being to serve as fodder for the search engines, and not meant for human eyes. Despite that, I feel that if you were to put your name to an article, you should be proud of it. As such, any article you write, for whatever purpose, should be a well written piece that a human reader can appreciate and enjoy.
