Writing A Good Money-making E-book

Writing E-books is still considered as one of the best ways to not only make money online, but also establish yourself as an authority on a subject, and build your reputation as an expert, worthy of bookmarking. But like anything else to do with writing, self publishing and making money from home, becoming a successful E-book author can take a considerable amount of time and effort to get started.

You don't necessarily have to have years of writing experience to write a good E-book. But you do need to know about, and have a 'feel' for, the subject you're writing on, and be prepared to thoroughly research its many aspects, so that your final copy is correct, truthful, useful, and - is/would be - beneficial to your target market.

Your E-book subject - deciding WHAT to write about

Whatever subject you've chosen, to be relatively sure it will be something people want to find out about, your first bit of research should include:
* Searching for the most popular E-book titles on the Internet, relating to your chosen subject, using the large online publishing sites as an example
* Researching what related words are searched for most on Google, and checking against the title wording you're considering, to see how many similar titles are in the top ranks.

As well as the above, you need to have a picture in your mind of the kind of people you're aiming your E-book at. What are they looking for..? What kind of questions do they want answered..? What would benefit them, and satisfy their needs, most..?

Your E-book Title: it can make or break your success

Once you've got your results, spend time thinking about the final title of your E-book. It should contain words with a medium - high ranking, be catchy and memorable, and have instant appeal or 'intrigue' about it. After all, it's your title that will attract and sell your E-book in the first instance. If it doesn't have immediate appeal, it's likely it won't sell.

Your E-book Plan - contents

As well as your title, you'll need a writing plan. Your E-book should take your reader on a logical 'journey' through each section, answering any 'How', 'When', 'Where', questions - and also providing examples and references if possible - and ending up with a conclusion, with maybe further references, related websites, addresses, etc. In that way, your reader is likely to be pleased with their purchase, and may buy other titles you produce.

The way you write...

In three words: friendly, authoritative and conversational. With each section you write, imagine your reader is a good friend - and you're trying to give him/her the best information and advice you can. Make it easy to follow, with:

* Positive chapter titles, plus sub-heads to break up longer sections, and...
* Bullet points to simplify details, benefits, etc., and numbered sequences where it's a '1,2,3' instruction. Also try -
* Underlines and bold type to emphasize important instructions (but don't overdo it). * Illustrations or graphics, and colour panels will help to bring your subject alive - and retain the reader's interest.

Don't forget: your E-book is also a promotional medium too. So try to include links to your website, or similar articles, or even recommended trusted other site addresses for further information, as a 'summary', at the end. If your prime aim is to capture prospects addresses, consider promoting your work as a free E-book download first, to what kind of response it gets.

The all-important look of your finished E-book...

Now - the penultimate decision, (apart from the title) is the title cover design. If you have design skills, great! Otherwise, either buy a cover design software solution, or even employ a graphic designer to design your cover for you, if you have the budget. Either way, study other E-book covers, and try to make yours stand out, without going too 'hard-sell'.

Finally, before you publish, thoroughly proofread your work for spelling and grammar - even get someone else to proofread it too. A mistake can easily be missed in editing if the same person does both.
