Writing For Scholarly Journals

Scholarly journals are publications which contain an assortment of journal articles written by professionals and experts in a given field. Published weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly or annually, they represent the newest work by leading professionals. The articles in scholarly journals may be intended to introduce the latest research findings, new discoveries or fresh concepts, or they may offer critiques or additional information on current theories and research. While scholarly journals may focus on a broad topic or theme, they may instead narrow in on a subcategory within a specific area of study.

Virtually every category of study in higher education has scholarly journals, from the social sciences to all branches of medicine, the hard sciences and throughout all of the humanities. These journals are an essential resource for new students as well as those studying advanced academic programs, in addition to speaking to higher level academics. Written by respected experts and researchers in each given field, the articles tend to have distinctly academic focus.

In order to be accepted for publication in a scholarly journal, the article manuscripts are usually assessed through a peer-review panel. More specifically, the journal editor sends submissions to a small range of academic scholars within that field. Their reviews, critiques, observations and recommendations on the article allow the editor to make an informed decision about whether it is a valuable addition to the publication.

When writing an article for consideration for publication in an academic journal, an author must ensure that the information is presented in a clear, concise and professional manner, respecting guidelines and the culture of the field. Examples should be provided, as well as research findings and all citations necessary to support the thesis of the article. Many articles build upon findings as they have been presented in previous journals, and therefore citations are key, both for tracing the line of research and to avoid accusations of research theft or plagiarism.

Having a scholarly article in published in an academic journal is a way of gaining credit, prestige and acclaim in one’s chosen field, beyond the value of being able to share information with one’s peers. It is considered an almost obligatory step in gaining recognition in some fields.
