Writing Is A Special Skill: Or, You Can Be Great At Engineering And Still Not Be A Good Writer

Great emphasis is placed upon writing at all levels of study, in all disciplines. Increasingly, high schools, colleges, and universities practice what they call “writing across the curriculum,” which means that they stress writing, and the acquisition of writing-related skills, in subjects ranging from mathematics to art. There are some good reasons for this, including above all the fact that communication via the written word is a critical part of our culture.

However, some folks think that this writing across the curriculum is a good idea taken a bit too far. The reality is that we all need to know how to make ourselves understood no matter what we do for a living; but we do not all need to know how to write absolutely perfect English, nor do we need to know how to write in any genre, any style, about any subject. In other words, writers need to know how to write, and the rest of us do not. We need to know how to do what we want to do, whether that's renovate an old house, design a bridge, or save a life.

That assertion leads us to two conclusions. First, it is time to really give credit to professional writers. They are a remarkable group of people with a very specialized skill set. So often we take for granted the ability to throw words together, and we don't really consider everything that goes into the end result. And so, it is important to appreciate that select few who have the talent to write, and who have developed that talent.

Second, if you are a student attending an institution in which writing is stressed across the board, don't kill yourself trying to be Shakespeare in every class. Do your best to keep up with the minimum writing requirements, and if you are still having trouble, find a good, solid, academic writing and research company to assist you. Make sure that your chosen company employs only writers who have years of professional writing experience, writers who are native speakers of English, to ensure that you receive the best model papers. Not only will this take a load off for you, but it will also improve your own writing skills in a way that classroom assignments cannot.
