Are you getting the 3 red light error or red ring of death? If so, don't immediately assume that your console is defective. You may be having difficulties with getting power to your console.

5.) Your power brick is overheating.
The power brick is not getting adequate ventilation. Place it on a hard surface away from anything soft like a shag carpet.
6.) Your power brick is damaged.
Borrow a power brick from your friend or use a spare that you already own. If that solves the problem, then the problem was a defective power brick.
