Yankees Win World Series!

Yankees win 2009 World Series!
In the immortal words of broadcaster John Sterling, "Yankees win! Yankees win! The Yankees win!"
Yankee Stadium in the Bronx erupts as fans celebrate yet another World Series title. Delirious fans burst into a noticeably off-key version of "We are the Champions" while the team rejoices on the field after the final out of the series is recorded.
Yes, order has been restored in the baseball universe. For the 27th time in their storied history, the New York Yankees have emerged as World Series champions by defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6 to take the series four games to two.
It had been nine long years since the Yankees had stood atop the baseball mountain and now the team was able to celebrate the perfect ending to its inaugural season at the new Yankee Stadium. After 103 regular-season victories and another 11 post-season wins, the Yankees could once again call themselves champions.

"This is what the Steinbrenner family has strived for, year after year -- to deliver to the city of New York," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "To be able to deliver this to the Boss, the stadium that he created and the atmosphere around here, it's very gratifying to all of us."
How fitting and ironic this victory turned out to be in light of the July 2010 deaths of Yankee owner George Steinbrenner and long-time public address announcer Bob Sheppard.

In what turned out to be his final year in pinstripes, Hideki Matsui tied a World Series record with six RBIs and batted .615, the third highest average in World Series history, to earn the most valuable player award in the series.
"My first and foremost goal when I joined the Yankees was to win the world championship," Matsui said. "Certainly, it's been a long road and a very difficult journey. I'm just happy that after all these years, we were able to win and reach the goal that I had come here for."

Meanwhile, for a quartet of Yankee mainstays -- Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera - it was a return to their glory days. They partied like it was 2000 all over again as they acquired a fifth ring for the thumb -- 3,296 days after the last one.
"You realize how difficult it is to get here," said captain Jeter. "I never lost sight of the fact that it's very difficult to get to the World Series, let alone to win one. You realize and remember how hard it is."
And above all else, the victory was dedicated to principal owner Steinbrenner, whose declining health forced him to take in the victory via television from his Tampa, Fla., home.
The cynics will be quick to point out that this victory was hardly unexpected. In fact, anything less would have been a major disappointment for Yankee faithful. With an annual payroll of some $200 million and after doling out contracts in the off-season totaling $423.5 million to acquire the top three free agents on the market - namely, pitchers CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, along with first baseman Mark Teixeira - the Yankees proved once again that money can indeed buy you a championship.

But, for the entire franchise, the biggest statement was the five-word slogan affixed to the franchise post-season run -- "Win It For The Boss."
And, win it they did.
