Did you do some yard work last weekend? If so you were actually exercising. Most people do not see it that way, but besides being work, yard work is also physical exercise for your body. It is a different kind of physical exercise, but as long as you get past the 1 hour mark you are doing something good for your body. Many people feel that physical exercise has to be something sportive, but that is not true.
One important thing in regards to exercising is that you a) start moving your body and b) that the "exercise" is for at least 45-60 minutes. Your body needs this "threshold" to benefit from the exercise, especially if you want to lose weight. Research has shown that exercise of around 30 minutes is good for your overall health, but that it is the bare minimum that you would give to your body. Compare it the oil your car engine needs to function properly. If you ever measured the oil in your engine you know that there is a minimum and a maximum marker. The names say it all, the minimum is need to keep your engine alive. It works the same way with your body's health.
Here is a story you might find surprising. I workout usually 5-6 times a week and I consider myself fairly fit. Last weekend it came down to my annual deck refinishing. Sanding and staining a large deck is a lot of work. Using a brush and a roller to apply the stain I finished considerably fast and got it all done in one day. I was tired and my body ached a little bit, but not much. I relaxed a little bit, took a long hot shower, and then went for a walk. I fell into bed a few hours later and slept through the night like a stone. When I woke up the next morning I could barely move. I could barely sit down or bend my back. It was horrible and I needed a few Advil LiquidGels to get through the day.
What had happened? Well, I exercised. But this time I did stuff so different from when I usually work out that my muscles decided that this unusual. I used many smaller muscles that I usually never use to that extend and those were the ones giving me pain. I admit, my own workout routine is not perfect. I am a runner and so I run a lot + do a little back work and work on the abs, but that is it. Our bodies have somewhere between 650 and 850 different muscles (depending on which expert you consult) and you can imagine that even when we use of those muscles that there is still a large number we barely use. Unusual exercise will expose those muscles in a dramatic way. In my case it was that I could barely do certain body moves.
Conclusion: Yard work is exercise. It is just different from what we do at the gym. And because it is different, thatýs why we feel it even more when we finally work out doing yard work.
