Yorkshire Dales, The Perfect Place For Walks

The Yorkshire Dales is quite rightly considered as one of the top places in the UK for going on a walking holiday. The fine natural surroundings, charming towns and villages and extensive accommodation and food options make it a walking location which suits most people’s needs.

As well as these advantages, the Yorkshire Dales is also blessed with a variety of terrains and trails, which means that it is perfect for short, unchallenging strolls as well as longer and more strenuous hikes.

If you are planning on taking a walking trip to the Dales then there are a couple of ways to go about it. Serious walkers will probably feel happier planning their route in advance to make sure that they cover the top villages, the most interesting sections of the numerous walking trails and the best scenery. This option would mean checking out online walking maps and carefully working out how much distance you would expect to cover during each day.

Those holiday makers who want to experience the best of Yorkshire but who aren’t as bothered by the exact trails they follow as by the overall pleasure of being out in the wilds soaking up the landscape may be just as happy choosing a town which suits them and using this as a base. Once you arrive it is easy to check with the local Tourist Information staff for details of local walks.

A good idea if you are planning your trip around walks and hikes is to see what natural attractions and historic landmarks you can cover in your journey. For example, if you are interested in seeing the local wildlife then the Snaizeholme red squirrel trail gives you a great opportunity to come across not just the UK’s only indigenous squirrel species but also some fine woodland birds and maybe even a few roe deer. All of this wildlife is contained in a fantastically scenic and peaceful setting, and there are plenty of similar wildlife opportunities throughout the rest of the area too.

There are also a number of spectacular cave formations to be explored in different sections of the Dales region, the wonderful Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes, castles, waterfalls and lots of other attractions to keep the whole family entertained. And, of course, you are never very far from an historic inn, classy restaurant or friendly cafe in which to rest your limbs and enjoy some good local hospitality.

Whatever type of walking holiday you are looking for, you will find it in the welcoming Yorkshire Dales.
