You Can Write Jingles For Money!

Let’s start with a sensible question – what is a jingle? Quite simply, a jingle is an advert, a phrase – generally to music – that espouses the benefits of buying a product or engaging a service. Someone, somewhere, has to write jingles – why shouldn’t it be you?

The advertising world has been in love with jingles for a long, long time; on the TV and the radio they are plentiful, and with the advent of online advertising they are also making their presence felt on the internet: who writes the, and why?

Indeed many writers consider the jingle to be a ‘lower form’ of writing, but that is before they find out how much money can be made by writing them! Indeed, payment for jingles can be quite impressive, and that’s why you should be looking at writing jingles for money.

Where to start: the best place to begin is locally. There is no point in looking to write a jingle for a major multinational organisation, but what about the local shop, service, garage or club that advertises on local radio?

Despite opinion to the contrary radio is still a massive advertising medium, and commercial radio is very popular indeed. Yu will undoubtedly have a local station, so why not start by asking around local businesses that advertise on there, and seeing if they require a new jingle writing? Keep your price sensible and you may find it a perfect foot in the door – everyone starts somewhere, after all!

The internet is also a great place to search for people requiring jingles, and the use of forums and networking is a great help.

A bit about jingles may be of benefit before you start looking: jingles are short and to the point, catchy and memorable, and will run for no longer than a few seconds – generally around ten for the longest ones. They need to name check the product ideally, and to entice the buyer into remembering that particular brand when they next go to the shop. It is almost as if a subliminal level needs to be reached.

The best way to research jingles is to turn on your local radio station – or scour a few for more breadth and variety – and carefully watch TV adverts for ideas; this will give you a guideline as to what is required from a jingle.

Knock on many doors – you will have to before you find one that wants to try you out; once you have that first jingle on air, you may be set to follow an interesting and lucrative career!
