That can't possibly happen to me! Sound familiar? It should. That's the typical response people give when they're faced with some particularly troubling statistics, and one which you may have heard or given yourself a number of times. This response usually comes as a result of vehement denial or sincere doubt, as the people who use that quote refuse to believe or simply don't believe that they can turn out to be among those statistics. For example, what would you say if I told you that one person in the United States is robbed every 15 seconds? Would you really be affected by the news, or would you just shrug it off, thinking that the chance of you being that person is slim to none? If you're like most people, you'd do the latter. And that's the problem. It's true that there's just a slim chance that you will turn out to be one of those victims. But that's not the point, is it? The point is that there's a real chance that you could be, no matter what the odds are. And because you like so many others like you tend to forget that, you become complacent. Overconfident. And because of that complacency, you become more vulnerable. You become more likely to fall victim to burglaries because your overconfidence somehow manages to convince you that you don't need to do anything to prevent burglaries from happening in your own home. That's why you have to shed any false notions you have of being safe from burglaries and break-ins. You have to learn that it takes awareness and hard work to avoid being a statistic. You can acquire the former without leaving your seat. Run an Internet search on locksmith and security companies, visit their websites, and read up on what you can do to improve your home security. And while you're online, scan their sites for any equipment that could help: locks, alarms, CCTV cameras, security bars, and so on. Invest in whatever you can afford, and have them installed in your home. And for once, feel secure with the thought that you did something to stay safe, as opposed to leaving it all to chance. Yes, burglaries and break-ins can happen to you. But by putting in the time and energy to prevent them as best you can, there's hardly any chance at all that they will.
