Maybe you are one of the people who thinks that the world would be a better place if everyone just behaved themselves as befits rational adults. There are millions of people just like you, but they all share the same problem. The other millions of people out there don't see why the should have to act responsibly. And that's part of the reason why you have to have car insurance.

It's not just about having the money to pay for repairs. Liability coverage is the more important aspect of this kind of thing. There is a horrible feedback loop that exists between the providers, the hospitals, and the courts which is responsible for a lot of the high costs associated with automobile accidents.

Medical attention is not cheap in this country. If you get in an accident on the highway, you stand a pretty good chance of receiving some kind of injury, and if you are smart then you will have a doctor check it out right away. If this injury requires treatment, you need to find the money for that.

More importantly, if the collision was your fault (either as determined by a court or by your own admission) then you will probably be liable for the expenses of the person you hit. Their automobile repairs and any medical expenses might very well be your responsibility in many instances.

Even if we were all ridiculously wealthy and could easily absorb the cost of freeway accidents, there is still the fact that people need some kind of incentive to behave like grown ups sometimes. As the old saying goes, people are most vulnerable in the wallet. The perceived threat of financial instability caused by sudden and large unnecessary expenses such as catastrophic medical bills can do a whole lot toward keeping people somewhat respectful of their fellow motorists. It's necessary to have car insurance.
