You Need A Pregnancy Bra? Then You Need To Know What To Buy!

If you are nearing the end of your first trimester, you will be starting to notice a number of changes to your body, all in preparation for the growth, development and birth of your child. You will probably be experiencing an increase in your bust size which indicates it is now time to choose a pregnancy bra.

Where to buy one? Pregnancy bras are available online, in department stores and dedicated lingerie stores. I found there were definite advantages in being professionally fitted for your maternity bra, particularly if it’s your first pregnancy, which means visiting a lingerie store. Sizing is different to your regular lingerie; you cannot simply choose a size bigger. If you choose to buy online, make sure you choose a reputable brand with a comprehensive sizing guide.

What size will I need? You will expand at certain stages and each person is different but the three trimesters of a pregnancy generally indicate times to be refitted. Not only will your cup size increase, but also your diaphragm so the maternity bra you choose needs to have six rows of back adjustors, shoulder straps which can be lengthened and very soft, 100% cotton lining to avoid chafing of tender areas of tissue. If you choose to visit a department store and select your nursing or pregnancy bra yourself, a simple guide regarding whether or not the bra fits, is if your hand slides easily and comfortably into the cup. You will need to be re-fitted at around seven months. The pregnancy bra you have fitted in your third trimester should expand comfortably during the early stages of your milk coming in.

What style of bra should I choose? Many maternity bras are also suitable for breastfeeding. The main difference is the inclusion of a maternity clip which allows the cup to drop down for ease of feeding. There are side sling support bras and A-frame support as well as ¾ and full cup bras. There will be a shape which suits you best and again, I found being professionally fitted with this meant I made the right choice the first time and avoided buying ill-fitting bras which were uncomfortable after the first wear. The pregnancy bra you choose must support the breast from beneath even when the cup is open. This makes feeding less of a struggle and reclosing the bra simple. I do recommend buying something gorgeous! Just because this is maternity lingerie does not mean to say it can’t be feminine, fashionable and sexy! There are companies dedicated to fulfilling each of these requirements while utilising the very latest technology in supportive, breathable fabrics which are still exquisite and endure the extra laundering necessary for nursing and maternity bras.

Do I need underwire? No, you don’t. Underwire can lead to blocked milk ducts and breast infections which generally need to be treated with antibiotics, something that is best to avoid during pregnancy. The breast’s milk producing tissue extends all the way back to your rib cage and up into your armpit. An underwire bra may obstruct the milk ducts in this area, as well as poking you and digging into your expanding baby belly each time you sit down.

What should I avoid in my new pregnancy bra?

- underwiresynthetic/plastic cup linings.
- rough lace trims or linings.
- ill fitting bras – either too big or too small.
- front opening bras (difficult to use with a hungry baby on your lap and generally leaves both breasts exposed).
- Maternity & breastfeeding bras which have limited hooks and straps which allow for expansion.
- Using strong detergents to launder your lingerie both for durability and the possibility of reaction on tender nipple areas.
