You Need This Article. Why? Because A Marketing & Advertising Design Agency Says So
The truth is that a successful marketing design agency knows you and me remarkably well, and in some ways, they often know us better than we know ourselves. For example, think about the products and services you buy. Now think about why you buy them. The answer ‘because I always have’ is fairly lazy - there was probably a good reason why you started with that particular brand, product, service or company. But whenever you go shopping you make a number of choices, from the shops you visit, the products you buy and the specific brands or labels you choose. But do you really know why you make those particular choices? Granted, in some cases you may have spent some time researching the different products, reading reviews, discussing your intended purchase with other people, looking it up online, finding out about the alternatives and so forth. But honestly, could you do this for every purchase you make? You might go to that much trouble if you’re buying a car - but what about a can of beans? A razor blade? There may be some intermediary products where you make some effort to research the product beforehand, but rely heavily on the same gut instinct which drives you towards particular brands for everyday products. This might include mobile phones, books and even clothing. Much of your gut instinct is driven by the marketing & advertising design agency which was responsible for developing the logo, the brand image, the labelling and the packaging. Virtually everything you buy is labelled in some way, whether it’s a book’s cover, a DVD case, a can of spaghetti or even a toaster. It’s therefore important for creative advertising graphic designers to understand how we respond to certain styles, certain techniques and particular colours, images or words in order to sell us what they want us to believe we need! You might just need to re-read that sentence, but in effect it means that we buy what the creative graphic designers want us to buy, and they achieve this by understanding how we, as consumers, tick. There are several elements which individually help creative advertising graphic designers to impart their message most effectively, and decisions or choices made for each of these will have a significant impact on the eventual success of the products or brand. These key areas include the words, fonts, colours, images, layout and relative significance. What do all these mean, and how do they have the effect of making us want to buy one particular product over another? If you understand how these work, and the effect they have on a consumer’s brain, you’re in serious danger of breaking free of the advertising design agency’s grip - so beware, you might end up making your own free choices in future! Clearly the words used will have an effect. If you’re looking for a fountain pen, then you’re more likely to buy one which uses words such as ‘glides’, ‘smooth’ and ‘professional’ on the packaging, rather than the pen which simply has words such as ‘pen’, ‘writes’, and ‘ink’. Now think about the font. If it’s a jolly, humorous one, then this gives a rather childish impression. Perhaps a playful impression is suitable in some cases, but a professional fountain pen needs a more formal, business like font. A smooth, italicised font may even help give the impression that the pen was used to write on the packaging itself, enhancing its professionalism, smoothness and crispness. The marketing & advertising design agency will think about colours - often fountain pens are associated with wooden desks, leather books and so colours such as rich browns or deep reds will be used to give a sub conscious impression of this kind of setting. From the choice of images used, to the way text and images are set against each other, creative advertising graphic designers will use a myriad of techniques to provide you with a sub conscious impression of quality or suitability, and will rely on your instinct to pick up on these techniques, and encourage you to make the choice they want you to!
