You And Antarctica: Your Perspectives

Now that she?s seen Antarctica, this ninety-one year old traveler has seen almost every corner of the earth. She wasn?t going to rely on someone else?s vision of the land, as found in magazines or on television, she wanted to see it for herself. This was the third time she'd visited the region, but the first time she'd actually seen Antarctica. They may never have touched down, but they certainly flew above it.

She traveled over Antarctica for four hours time and saw fjords, glaciers and mountain peaks. At one point they even descended to 300 feet above the ground. Fog inundated one mountain peak. Clear skies and sunny weather gave them perfect viewing opportunities. Even though the flight took place at the end of the Antarctic Summer, early March, the air was below freezing. The flight came with a naturalist who was both tour guide and lecturer. The scientist was currently working in Antarctica.

Our traveler really wanted to glimpse some penguins on this trip. She didn?t see any on the flight, but her daughter did. The daughter was sitting at a different window. They visited the Falkland Islands, near Argentina, on a cruise ship. She boarded yet another boat to get to the East Falkland Island. Hundreds of Magellan penguins live on one beach there. Magellans stand the tallest of all penguin species.

They flew over 16 hours from the United States to South America, where the cruise began. South American ports were visited, and then the crew asked them to take a dip in the ship?s pool. She is now the proud owner of a certificate stating that this ninety-one year old took a swim, even though the air temperature was only thirty five degrees.

After reaching Rio, she flew out. She had toured Santiago after being driven there when the cruise ship reached Chile. They experienced excellent weather during their three week cruise. The clearness of the night air allowed all the passengers to see the Southern Cross, the smallest of all constellations.

Her last trip to South America brought her to the major river system and one large city. Loss of bird habitats from deforestation in the jungles surrounding that major river were a major concern of our traveler. She has also been to Africa to visit friends and go on Safari. A past trip to left Antarctica as the only continent she'd not visited. Her plan to see all the continents was finalized by traveling to Antarctica.
