Your Body: Happy Together With Fruits And Vegetables

Vegetables and fruits, which are loaded with fiber and vitamins and minerals, have been proven to be healthy for us and to prevent many types of diseases. Even though we are aware of their benefits, and every parent tells their child to eat them, many of us have trouble following Mom's advice.

Think about it before you pull up to the drive-through window and order those greasy burgers and fries for lunch the next time. Well, maybe meals like this don't happen everyday. But think about it: How often do you make a meal of something that's fast and easy, and instantly satisfying, like a brownie from the fridge, rather than taking the time to fix a nutritious meal full of the vitamins that we truly need?

Watermelon, cantaloupe, and grapes are very nutritious. These things just need to be rinsed and then they are ready for us to enjoy. There are also vegetables like celery, carrots, and cauliflower that are quick to prepare and can be enhanced with a yogurt dip or a vinaigrette dressing. It is no secret to medical researchers that we are not getting the fruits and veggies we need. They have created a movement to try and help remind the public to eat more fruits and veggies. 5 a day encourages us to get 5 fruits and vegetables into our diets daily.

It does at first sound like quite a lot, those five servings. Well, here are some ideas that can help you to accomplish this, beginning with fruit at breakfast. Put the fruit of your choice on pancakes, cereals or waffles. For later in the day when you crave a snack, take along a banana or apple to school or work.

It is especially easy to increase your vegetable servings. Another good idea is having a salad at lunchtime. When dining out, you should order sandwiches with tomatoes, lettuce or sprouts. You can add cans of pureed vegetables to muffins or cakes, or combine them in sauces and soups.

Celery or apples with peanut butter on top makes a great snack and it is very kid friendly. And speaking of kids, who are hard to convince and please when it comes to consuming vegetables, make sure they have a number of choices to consider. We're all familiar with the old saying, 'You won't get any dessert until you eat your vegetables.' There isn't much about that warning to make vegetables more appealing. What do you think would happen to our society if everyone changed their eating habits and consumed the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables daily?

What if we offered broccoli as a reward for eating dessert? Consuming juice is an excellent method of getting in additional servings of fruits and veggies. Unfortunately, there is no healthy fiber in a glass of fruit juice. It also kills your appetite. How many times have you seen a child drink a large cup of juice and then refuse to eat, claiming they aren't hungry? And juices are higher in calories than the whole fruits or vegetables.

Fruits and vegetables provide so many healthy advantages, you can't disregard them Studies have shown that by consuming the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables every day, rather than just a couple of servings, you will cut by half the chance of contracting up to 14 types of cancer. The chances of getting a heart attack, a stroke, and adult blindness are also lower among those who eat plenty of vegetables and fruits.

Even though we are well aware of these facts, we continue to find reasons why we can't eat our fruits and vegetables. Some people state that fresh fruits and vegetables are too costly while others say that they just do not have enough time to slice a strawberry. And then there's the old favorite - 'Just when I was ready to eat that peach, I saw it had already gone bad.'
