Your Major Isn't As Important As The Quality Of Your Education

Nowadays many high school students believe that college is just a waste of time. Even those that elect to go away to college usually do so on Mommy and Daddy's dime just to be able to be away from them and on their own without the penalties of really having to be an adult. In this respect it is likely that most don't even know what they want to do when they grow up.

Of course, they are not alone and many students feel that it is pointless to head to college if they don't know what they want to major in. After all, it is a little challenging when you are being asked right out of high school what you want to do with your life and you are yet to even discover who you really are. Fortunately these are not decisions that everyone needs to make right out of high school.

Most new college freshmen wind up deciding on a general major like liberal arts, communications, or even business management. These are the three most generalized degrees you can get and while many students are okay with going after a degree in "I don't know what the heck I want to do for the rest of my life," most parents are not happy with this choice and spend the entire time their student is in school trying to push them into one field or another, usually those that are the most beneficial.

It is important to understand that while there are some degrees that are better to have they are only good if the person is really into that particular field. And there really are benefits to getting a generalized degree. One of the biggest is that you can go into a variety of different fields with a general degree and usually not only are you more likely to make more money at the onset of the job but you are actually more likely to get promotions and raises over your non-degreed counterparts.

Certainly it would be nice if every student entering college would know precisely what they wanted to do with the rest of their lives but even those that think they do often change their mind throughout their college careers. Motivating your child to enter college and enroll in a degree program is definitely a good idea even if you can only get them to enroll in the local community college to start off. Having a degree in anything will help get them a leg up in a variety of different employment conditions.
