Your Money And How To Keep It
Have you ever heard the saying “watch out for the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves”? Well translate that to now, and that means, if you watch your pennies, then the dollars will take care of themselves, and you will be amazed at just how easy your money is slipping through your fingers everyday in small amounts. You may think what’s a dollar here or a few cents there, but just like in diets where you watch the calories add up, so do those small amounts. One of the best ways to watch where your money is leaking, is to take a small pad of paper with you for a week or two, and write down EVERYTHING that you spend even a nickel on. If you lead a hectic and busy life, then you may not realize just how much money it is costing you to keep yourself going during these busy days. A coffee here, a muffin there, a magazine, or maybe a quick lunch at work, or if the day has been really hectic, take out for dinner on the way home. If you add up even $5.00 a day in coffees or snacks, then that is $25.00 per week. That could be a movie out or some other fun thing on the weekend. A friend of mine, had a hard time making her car payment, and she said to me. “my life is so busy, and I make good money, so I don’t understand” We took the time and got her to write down everything she spent her money on. Since many days were long, she was constantly buying coffee, tea or treats to keep herself going. She actually added up $11.00 on most days, and $18.00 on really busy days, she was really stunned, as it was small items over the day. She was mostly using change for her purchases, especially the coffee, so it didn’t really feel like she was spending that much. She then realized that she was taking a twenty here and twenty there out of the ATM machine, which was triggering fees because it was not her bank branch. Each transaction was costing her $1.50!! So, for one week we worked out: Monday - 11.00 Tuesday - 18.00 Wed - 18.00 Thurs - 18.00 Friday - 11.00 Total - $76.00 per week, and that is not including the bank fees, and also she realized that she was depending on more takeouts for dinner. The above expenses were for during the day only at work. So, we sat down and figured out ways to save money without feeling deprived. She and a co-worker shared in a coffee pot for work. Then she dusted off her crock pot, and got dinner ready by plugging it in before she went to work. She then packed her lunch and snacks the night before. As you can probably do the math here, she was spending on average $76.00 per week or $304.00 per month on snacks and coffee.. It doesn’t seem real until you add it up for the month. She then decided how much cash she could have per week, and went to her own bank machine once a week and avoided fees, once it was gone that was it. She is now keeping her money, and growing it in a savings account for a special vacation, and is in charge of her financial future.
