Your Office Cubicle

You probably work in one of the popular cube farms, like those popularized by the comic strip Dilbert or Cathy. Most of the companies that have this kind of set up are call centers or publishing firms. These are work areas that make use of modular work spaces like office cubicles and others.

Many companies have switched to office cubicles from four walled offices. These office cubicles are divided by several panels and with their partial openings, they are easily accessed. They are often installed in the open areas of modern offices, and can provide enough privacy for their occupants.

Office cubicles can be easily accessorized and decorated with cubicle furniture such as overhead bins, bulletin boards or drawers. The pencil holders and magazine racks that are often placed on top of your desk can now be installed on the panels of these office cubicles.

The panel mounted cubicles, cubicles that come with components like desks mounted on the cubicle's panels, and freestanding cubicles, cubicles which panels are mounted around your own furniture, are the two kinds of office cubicles.

Most people have a negative perspective of cube farms, due to pop culture. References to cube farms in television shows, movies and comic strips often connote monotony, isolation, blandness and boredom. These references often crack us up, but are not exactly true.

Working in an office cubicle need not be like what we often think because of pop culture. We can make working in an office cubicle interesting and comfortable; we can spice it up by adding our personal effects. You can add photographs of your family, plaques, bobble heads, and more photos of your dog—but not too much. Do so in moderation, or better yet, ask your supervisor or Human Resources Department if this practice is acceptable.

To be on the safe side, though, let's keep our professionalism and not go overboard by adding too much décor or by adding offensive or degrading material. It is better just to leave cubicle furniture in its place, rather than bring in yours from home.

Since office cubicles are modular work spaces, they are convenient and they allow flexibility. They are private, productive and efficient work environments that allow you to accomplish your work without distractions and express your likes and interests as well. The best feat of office cubicles and cubicle furniture is that they're affordable and just right for company needs.
