Orchid repotting may sound complicated, especially if it is your first time. It is really not that difficult, but what makes it different is the way it is done. This is unlike repotting other plants.

How often should an orchid be repotted?

An orchid should be repotted every six months to three years, but of course, all these depend on the age and type of plant you have. Younger plants require more frequent repotting, while older plants require less. Orchids need to be repotted before their media breaks down and smothers the roots. If you do not repot an orchid in a timely manner, it can delay your plant’s growth rate and reduce the flower count.

When would I know the right time to repot my orchids?

Orchid repotting is necessary, especially if your pseudobulbs are extending beyond the edge of your pot. A pseudobulb is a bulblike, swollen stem that support the leaves. If you see them leaving young roots dangling in the air, then it is is time for you to repot. This also applies when your ochid’s soil also appears soppy and mushy.

For orchids with pseudobulbs, the ideal time to do orchid repotting is when it is beginning to grow but just before the new roots stretch and elongate. On the other hand, for other orchids like the the Phalaenopsis, you can repot almost anytime, as long as the plant is not flowering.

What kind of pot should I use?

This really depends on which you prefer. Clay pots give additional weight for plants that are light and are easily tipped over. These also dry faster than plastic ones. Clear plastic pots make it easier to see the roots so it becomes more convenient because you know when to water. Others say that clear pots make orchid roots engage in photosynthesis. Aside from this, you can also see most pests which may have set up in your orchid’s pot. If it is possible, always use new plantpots. If you cannot, wash the old one out very thoroughly and rinse with boiling water to kill any pathogens.

Which potting medium should I use?

Observe your environment and your habits because these will determine what kind of medium you should choose. If you like watering your plants, then choose a medium that will quickly dry out. If you a busy and do not have the time, then select the opposite. Find out what medium works best for you and your conditions.

What should I do the day before I repot?

Water your orchid thoroughly. A good watering the day before will make your plant’s roots pliable and much easier to work with. Be sure to let the compost soak in water overnight before repotting. The mix will absorb moisture, and soaking allows it to be packed more firmly around your plant’s roots.

Orchid repotting is needed especially when the old compost of your plant begins to break down. Because of this, the air would not be able to get to the roots which may cause your orchid to rot. So be sure to take note of these tips and watch your orchids thrive!
