Your Baby Is Hungry? How Do You Know That?

Mealtime can be such a pain when your baby starts crying, doesn’t want to eat and creates a mess around him. Maybe he doesn’t like that type of food, or perhaps he is not hungry, or he wants something else but he can’t actually say what. The best, easiest and funniest solution for you is to sign food with him. When visiting someone and sitting at the table with a lot of guests, would not be great for you that your little child names what he wants without creating a mess around him, crying and disturbing the others?

The best moment you can choose to start signing food with your baby is while he eats. First of all, learn the “Eat” sign so that your baby informs you when he’s hungry. The next step is learning the “Drink” sign, which is as important as “Eat” sign. The “Eat” sign is very simple to make, just make an O with your fingers and thumb, flatten them out repeatedly while you bring them to your mouth. Repeat the words every time you sign them.

The sign for “Drink” is even easier - just mime a drinking posture, holding a glass in your hand and taking it to your mouth repeatedly. After doing this with your baby and he signs back, you can repeat these signs every time someone eats and drinks, not necessarily someone from your family, but even someone on the street or people in restaurants, neighbours and so on. It is significant that you sign very often, every time an opportunity occurs. When you and your baby are hungry, just repeat the words “food” or “milk”, “table”, “spoon”, “plate”, “glass” and other objects on the table, while you’re signing.

This way, sign language eases your work a lot and saves your nerves. Very rewarding, isn’t that right? The next step is to learn signs for types of food and drinks, like milk, orange, juice, bread, water, apple, banana and so on. Also a very good trick is to learn to tell when your baby wants more of something and repeat the word “more” every time you sign it. The sign for this is making a flat O with your both hands, touching your fingers of your both hands repeatedly. It is also very important to repeat those words while you are signing, this way you will fasten the learning-to-speak process.
