Your Eulogy Should Speak About The Good Points Of The Deceased

What do you say when your funeral eulogy is for someone who has committed
suicide? Quite often family members are so distressed that they cannot speak and so ask someone less closely connected to speak on their behalf. It is a task that very few people will undertake willingly. Certainly you have to be very careful indeed in choosing your words.

Not one of us can put ourselves into somebody else’s head. We do not know why they do something. In the case of suicide there may be an obvious reason someone takes their own life but usually nobody else can tell why the deceased has taken that final. irrevocable step. If we did we would surely have tried to help in some way.

So you cannot explain but you must try to give some comfort to a family that is shocked and saddened and asking themselves
“Why?” You have to try to make some sense of a death that hasn’t been caused by natural causes.

It is worth remembering that however depressed or difficult a person becomes they are all born as lovely babies. Speaking of the childhood of the deceased means that you are speaking of a time before his or her difficulties began. It is something for the family to cling to, the memory of someone who was loved and cherished and wonderful.

Your eulogy should speak about the good points of the deceased. Many of those who commit suicide had obvious problems in their lives such as alcoholism or drugs. These should not be mentioned. Instead you should speak of their good points, the people they were behind the problem.

Try to find some gentle humour for your eulogy, something the deceased would have smiled at in their lifetime. Talk of old friends and people who loved the person who ended their life so unhappily. Speak of life and the problems it brings to all of us
and how some of us cope better than others in dealing with them.

Above all you cannot bring understanding but you can bring comfort. So let your eulogy remember the good times and overlook the bad. Above all let it bring hope that a loved one has now found the peace he or she sp badly needed and could not find.
