Ereader Review - The Libre From Aluratek, A No-frills Ebook Reader.

This device features a high-impact plastic black case, which we think is a good concept, but its design is a bit irregular as well as unusual. At the back of the Libre a rechargeable lithium battery pack is built in and because of this the base has a tapered rectangular appearance. This odd shape however allows you to leave the unit upright on your bedroom table at nighttime when you read a chapter or two of your favourite novel or even when you are charging it.

One thing that makes people resistant to first getting an eReader as opposed to traditional paperback books is the lack of physical relationship when you turn the actual page.

Pushing some control is not really as intuitive or satisfying for reasons uknown. Aluratek have tried to deal with this issue in the Libre simply by placing a 2.75-in. long slide on one side of the device. If you click down on it you can flip the page, press upward and you return to the previous page. To us this feels more satisfying to utilize than regular buttons, but it may seem a bit contrived to many.

On the eReader's front lower left are two switches that can also change the page if that is more preferable for you to make use of. You also have the left and right arrows on the D-pad button that do the same. Around the D-pad are also buttons that can magnify the font up to 6 different sizes, rotate the written text, back and forwards and also the function key. The function switch accesses the settings menu, bookmark record, dictionary, bookmark this page, jump to page and find. On the right side of the device are 8 buttons which are alphanumeric. These 8 buttons carry out different functions according to which "mode" is selected. They can also be used to enter data just like when you are texting on your phone. At the bottom of the device is the MP3 audio jack and the on/off button. At the top is a Micro USB port as well as an SD memory slot under a pullout cover. The main selling point for the Libre is the fact that it is simple and tactile. The menu system is in fact quite straightforward and easy to use once you grasp which button is designed for what function.

This eReader has the capacity to read many different file formats namely JPEG, PDF, ePub, PRC, RTF, TXT, FB2, BMP and GIF. This in a way makes it functional enough to become suitable for the various internet e-bookstores in addition to public domain libraries. It is also similarly comfortable for right and left handed individuals to utilize one handed. There are a few problems with this product, in particular the rather slow installing of e-books. The screen display is kind of dull and unfortunately you can't utilize it while it is charging.

Overall it works as you would anticipate for a no extras eReader. It is a device that could suit many people who're not heavy consumers and you could probably buy it for your mother because of its simplicity of use. The original offer price of $170 was way too high and would have been a deal breaker for many people. However the current sale price of $99 that Borders is offering might encourage you to give it as a present to a friend or family member.
