Ipad To Supplant The Netbook?

According to Katy Huberty, one of the leading analysts at the investment bank Morgan Stanley, the release of Apple’s iPad already starts to have a negative impact on Netbook sales. As a matter of fact, the demand for Netbooks started to fall back in January, that is long time before the first iPad has even been released, but the moment it first appeared on the shelves, the tablet Apple simply finished the Netbook. According to Katy Huberty, the growth in this market segment amounted to only 5 percent in April, but what is even more interesting is that 44 percent of potential iPad buyers were originally planning to buy a Netbook or a full-featured laptop before Apple introduced its first tablet to finally supplant all of them.

It is worth noting that not only the MacBook or similar mobile Windows systems, but also Ebook readers and iPod Touch could become victims of the iPad-mania. According to the statistics provided by Katy Huberty, 44 percent of MacBook and Windows laptop users, as well as 44 percent of iPod Touch owners are thinking to buy an iPad. To tell you the truth, this data has been collected over the past three months, so let’s not forget that after the New Year this market segment usually comes to a complete stall. Nevertheless, the available data for the period of March-April cannot but cause concern among Netbook and laptop manufacturers.

It is worth recalling that the functionality and performance of the iPad cannot compete with a full-featured laptop, especially when the tablet was originally designed as an alternative hi-end class solution to a Netbook. Nevertheless, the fact that the iPad may serve as a portable game console or an E-book reader, has only lent a hand to Apple. No one however can say for sure whether this trend will continue in the future and iPad will eventually supplant its competitors.

It only remains to add that initially Katy Huberty was very skeptical about the prospects of the iPad, but she quickly changed her views. Apparently, she had some pretty solid reasons for that.ÿ
