’poor’ Compensation Pay Out

Sisters of Mercy is one of the eighteen orders of Catholic priests, brothers and nuns within the Republic of Ireland, who were responsible for running the schools and workhouses for generations of deprived children, all the way up until the 1990s.

Ryan Report into abuse

Five of the order’s schools were listed and shamed in the Ryan Report into abuse. Goldenbridge orphanage in Dublin is one of the schools in the report. In this orphanage, children were forced to work all night creating rosary beads. If they could not stand up to the work schedule they faced horrific punishments.

Compensation for the Abuse

Catholic nuns that were responsible for child abuse have offered to pay their victims £116million in compensation. This money will go to thousands of victims that endured rape, molestation, beatings and all kinds of psychological torment. Some of the funds in the payout will be transferred into a trust for the former residents of the homes run by the nuns. Properties valued at £98million will be divided between the trust, the Irish government and multiple charities. The announcement of this payout became public approximately six months after two thousand people gave evidence regarding the horrific physical and sexual abuse that took place while in the care of the Catholic run institutions. The Ryan Report showed that church leaders appeared to have known about the endemic of sexual abuse in the boys institutions. The report also condemned the Roman Catholic Church itself for covering up thirty years of horrific sex abuse purpotrated on children by Irish priests.

The Orders and Institutions

The orders and institutions involved in the study as well as in the abuse were eager to deal with the issue and get passed it. The Sisters of Mercy, which was founded in Dublin in 1827, made a statement that they were 'deeply saddened at the findings of the Ryan Report' and 'wholeheartedly regrets the suffering experienced by the children in its care'. The order has already funded £30million and they have pledged a further £1.6million to its victims.
