News Servers of Usenet

If you are looking for a list of news servers of Usenet, you may be looking for a long time before you find all of them.  First of all, in a search for the news servers of Usenet, I ran across an article in Wikipedia on Usenet.  Within the article, it explains that there are certain Internet service providers that try to simulate a Usenet server, and many Internet service providers are not Usenet servers, as they are called "web gateways."  When trying to find the total number of servers used on Usenet, it presents a problem that borders on the impossible.  For one thing, servers from a university or business site can act as Usenet servers.  At the present time, the only information on news servers of Usenet that I have is that these servers provide news that is many times uncensored, can contain adult content, and can be accessed by Google groups.  A lot of the Usenet servers are free, and many of them are located within universities.

The most popular Usenet server around today is Giganews, and a long list of statistics on Usenet news servers can be found online by people who keep up with the news server statistics, of which they make reports online giving the top 1000 Usenet servers.  Usenet servers transmit the news, uncensored, from around the world, and the news that flows through Usenet servers is not the same type of news that is considered journalism, written strictly by people employed in the field of journalism.  News that is transmitted by Usenet servers can come from practically anyplace, and Usenet at the present time, I have read, has approximately 26 servers in use today.

If you access usenet.com, you will find that they offer a signup subscription now for the purpose of being able to use their full fee server farms on the west coast and the east coast, which will give you 120,000 plus text and binary groups.  Usenet.com uses a Web Gateway to connect to the east and west coast servers and offers members only two addresses now, as opposed to several addresses, as it was in the past, to connect to newsreaders.
