198 Squadron RAF UK: From World War I Until After World War II
The 198 Squadron of the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom played a major part in both World War I and World War II. The 198 Squadron RAF UK proudly announces its sacrifices and historical significance from its inception in June 1918 as a night flying training squadron until it was disbanded in September 1919, leaving it virtually forgotten until its re-emergence into the European battles of World War II in the latter part of 1942. The 198 Squadron, on December 8, 1942, began utilizing the Hawker Typhoon Fighter at their base in Digby as a night fighter squadron performing defensive flights over the north east of England. In 1943, the 198 Squadron RAF UK performed counterattacks against the raids over Southhampton and Portsmouth by Focke Wulf 190 fighter-bombers, and played a major part, from early 1944, through D-Day in June of 1944, in daytime raids conducted in France, knocking out enemy communication centers, radar stations, and coastal batteries. After D-Day, the 198 Squadron became a part of the 2nd Tactical Air Force's (2nd TAF) 84 Group 123 wing, as the Allies advanced from the Normandy beaches, and the 198 Squadron RAF UK began to closely support the Canadian Army. During its tenure in World War II, the 198 Squadron was based at 11 different bases from December 8, 1942, to April 30, 1944. The 198 Squadron RAF UK's Association is comprised of important flyers and ground crews from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, France, New Zealand, Trinidad, and Tobago. The 198 Squadron will be remembered for its offensive and defensive fighter flights in European World War II history. The 198 Squadron's disbandment was in 1945, after World War II.
