Lvov Universities: The Universities of Ukraine
Down through modern history, the Lvov universities, from the latter part of the 19th century, until the mid part of the 20th century, were known in the world of academics as having produced some of the best students of mathematics and philosophy in Eastern Europe. The connection with Lvov and academics has been a big one. Lvov, at one time having been partitioned and considered part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, is a center of important and historic academic disciplines, such as Polish logic, philosophy and mathematics, long known for its hosting such institutions of learning as the Lvov-Warsaw School, (LWS), established in the late 19th century by Kazimierz Twardowski, who later would fuse the departments of logic and mathematics together at Lvov-Warsaw School to become an important movement in Polish philosophy in pre-WWII Poland. Today, Lvov universities, in the Ukraine, dot the Ukranian landscape, totalling approximately 12 in number and serving Ukranian and Polish students in a diverse group of academic disciplines such as polytechnics, medicine, forestry, and agriculture. Lvov has long been an academic center of learning and has produced many well-known academics in such disciplines as mathematics, logic and philosophy, and continues to host Ukranian students who have kept on with the movement against political interference in academics, as has historically happened in the Ukraine pre and post-WWII and during the occupation by the Soviets beginning after the 1945 post-WWII period.
