1. Make yourself a round cake of any size that you choose.
2. Next, you will need to find an icing-filled bag of the # 5 size.
3. Then draw the lines for the basketball in the same fashion as you see them on your example basketball in a dark brown color.
4. Make sure to use a #18 star tip icing to do the fill-in work between the lines of the basketball and a #5 tip to do the outline work.
5. Draw the eyes on the basketball and the mouth, preferably a mouth with a great big smile.  With the smile, you will know that the mouth will curve upward at each corner.  Fill in the iris part of the eyes with a darker shade of icing, along with the color of the pupils to suit your taste; that is, blue, brown, green, or gray.  You can use a food coloring to match the shades of the colors that you want for the eyes and the lines on the basketball, as well as the mouth, which you will need black icing for.
6. If you want to show a bit of the tongue inside the mouth, then proceed to draw the appearance of part of the tongue inside the smiling mouth of the basketball cake with red icing.
7. Now do the fill-in work with a medium brown icing and fill in the rest of the cake following the curved lines.
8. Use a red food color spray to fill in the corners of the mouth where it curves upward.
