Brief History Of Animation

Animation has gained popularity in the recent years. It has been used mostly for entertainment purpose. However, now it is being used as educational animation and instructional animation to support leaning and explanation. Animation is a process to make movies, films, computer or video games in which models or drawings of animals and people appear to move. The illusion is created by sequential image displays of static elements.

Animation is a very time consuming process and is an expensive one. Most animation for movies and TV is done in animation studios. The animation field has existed since 1950s when film production or video production was done by individuals or independent studios. The independent animation producers now have joined many of the professional animation company.

The method of limited animation was popularized by Hanna-Barbera, pioneered by UPA and adapted by many other studios as cartoons moved to television from movie theaters. This method can enhance production and decrease the cost by taking means of short cut in animation process.

The effects of animation started long before. It is not a new invention. In cave paintings of Old Stone Age, animals had many legs on superposed positions attempting to capture the movement. Flip books became quite popular in 1800 when by thumbing through the books; the viewer could get the idea of movement. It was only after the motion picture films that animation films took off really. No person can be accredited for being the animation film’s creator.

The first person to dip his foot with the use of animation techniques in movies was Georges Melies. He was the one who discovered the stop motion animation accidentally with the breaking up of his camera. J. Stuart Blackton combined the stop motion and hand drawn animation for first time. Blackstone is in fact, often referred as the first animator to have been successful.

Emile Cohl, the French artist made a film in 1980. The film was made from cartoon strips which were painted in hand. The name of the movie was Fantasmagorie. Fantasmagorie was thus the first animated movie. In fact as far as animation is concerned the continent of Europe has a significant contribution. France, especially had a great role to play in development of the animation industry. Even today this form of art enjoys great patronage in Europe and around nine European channels program 500 hours annually.

Many artists after this began experimenting. Winsor McCay, the newspaper cartoonist produced Gertie the Dinosaur and Little Nemo. Cartoon animation film in 1910 started to rule the world. The technique was famous in the name of cel-animation.

Walt Disney and Warner Bros studio are the legendary name associated with animation industry. United Productions of America and Japan started to produce animated films with limited animation. Rotoscoping is another famous technique. Max Fleischer in 1917 patented it. Clay animation, graphic-animation, object-animation, animation modeling, puppet animation, and stop motion animation are some of other animation techniques. The latest method of computer animation includes various types of techniques.

Animation is a film technique. It is however, now a distinct film category. These films are ideal for capturing the innocent minds of children. However, it is quite difficult to find a grown up person who will not enjoy animation movies. This technique is best for depicting the fairy tales.
