Famous Montessori Alumni: Jeff Bezos
Amazon.com is an online retailer, in fact the largest electronic commerce company in the United States. Founded in 1994 and launched in 1995, Bezos’s Amazon.com has changed the retail world permanently. Bezos reflects on his early education at a Montessori school until the end of the 3rd grade as essential to who he is today. He was given the confidence and nurturing environment to focus on personal exploration and creativity. As he grew up and entered public schools, Bezos fiddled with electronics and science projects but instead of following his plan to study physics, he chose to study computer science and electrical engineering in university. He even coined the term Artificial Artificial Intelligence (AAI). Amazon.com was originally called Cadabra, but many people associated the name with the word cadaver. He wanted to give the impression of something large and expansive while also having the practical sense of being at the top of alphabetic listings, so he chose Amazon. The logo has an arrow that points from the A to the Z as a symbol that they will have every product in the alphabet. The website was originally built to be an online bookstore, but quickly diversified to become an online retailer of entertainment, computer goods, clothing and accessories and even furniture. As the site grew with national demand, Bezos realized there was an international demand as well. Since, he has expanded by creating websites for the Americas as well as many European and Asian countries.
